The best filter coffee in Amsterdam

12 places·Updated September 16, 2026·How we score

White Label Coffee in Oud West leads on range: espresso, V60 and AeroPress from its own roastery. LOT61 Coffee Roasters in Oud Zuid follows with house-roasted beans and serious sourcing. Monks Coffee Roasters is third, pouring filter, cold brew and drip with an Australian sensibility.

White Label Coffee

9.0

Oud West

Oud West's roastery café with earned authority.

“Two Dutch competition wins, the 2015 Aeropress Championship and 2019 Roast Masters, aren't decorations here, they're the baseline. The Kees van der Westen Spirit is dialled with the kind of confidence that comes from roasting your own beans on-site. Order the double naked and watch the extraction before you do anything else.”

LOT61 Coffee Roasters

8.3

Oud Zuid

House-roasted, seriously sourced, and worth the detour.

“LOT61 roasts everything in-house, the Zimzala blend alone, with its Brazil-Peru base and stone fruit finish, justifies the trip to Oud Zuid. Three espresso machines on the bar, Mahlkönig E80 and EK43 on the grind, and a cold brew that holds up against anything pouring in the city right now.”

Order Cold brew, Mont Blanc, Cinnamon roll, Lemon cake, or their soothing espresso.

Monks Coffee Roasters

8.0

Oud West

In-house roasting with an Australian soul in Oud West.

“Patrick Abbott spent 26 years in Melbourne before opening this, and it shows, the brunch menu holds its own against the coffee, which is saying something when the beans are roasted on a 12kg Probat a few kilometres away. Order the Turkish eggs alongside a filter and you'll understand why the neighbourhood stopped letting other businesses survive in this spot.”

Black Gold Amsterdam

8.0

Centrum

The cortado is dialled. The records are real.

“Black Gold runs White Label Coffee through a La Marzocco Linea and takes the extraction as seriously as the crates. The cortado is the move, balanced, clean, no theatre. Then you flip through the hip hop and jazz selection while it cools, and suddenly an hour has passed.”

Bos en Lommer

The roastery flagship where Gesha and rare micro-lots meet a neighbourhood cafe

“Lex Wenneker's competition pedigree shows in the cup, not the attitude. The Super Special filter list rotates through anaerobic lots and rare Geshas that most cities reserve for cupping labs, yet the room stays loose, with strawberry matcha and kimchi toasties sharing counter space with the EK43.”

Scandinavian Embassy

9.5

De Pijp

Tim Wendelboe on tap, in Amsterdam's most filter-serious room

“Most cafes that claim Nordic influence mean blonde wood and a Spotify playlist. Scandinavian Embassy means Tim Wendelboe, Drop Coffee, and Koppi rotating through a Victoria Arduino Black Eagle, with pour over and AeroPress given equal billing to espresso. The Nordic Filter changes with the sourcing, and the cardamom buns sell out before noon for good reason.”

Back to Black

8.5

Centrum

Roastery-cafe done with conviction, not performance.

“Back to Black roasts its own beans on a Giesen W6 and pulls them through a Kees van der Westen Spirit, that's a serious commitment for a room this size. The Chef's Table Espresso, two sequential shots dialled to show different profiles, is the clearest argument for ordering at the bar. The apple pie is baked in their own Westpoort bakery. None of this is accidental.”

Toki

8.5

De Jordaan

The Jordaan's slowest coffee bar, in the best sense.

“Toki runs Bonanza Coffee Roasters out of Berlin through a La Marzocco Linea PB and a Kalita Wave programme that actually rotates. The Max Lamb terrazzo, the bamboo, the eyeless smiley on the wall, it all adds up to a room that makes you order a second coffee just to stay in it.”

Sango Specialty Coffee

9.5

Centrum

Competition-grade filter in Amsterdam's historic centre.

“Mitchell La Grouw Onuki finished second at the 2025 Dutch Brewers Cup, and the lots on the filter menu make that credential feel earned. The La Marzocco Linea Strada is dialled tight, the sourcing runs from Kenya to Panama, and the 1670 building gives the whole thing a gravity that newer fit-outs can't buy.”

Uncommon Coffee

8.5

Oud West

The laptop ban is the point, and the coffee earns it.

“Uncommon roasts its own beans and means it, the origins list runs from Sidama to Panama Geisha to a Burundi Red Bourbon, and the filter bar treats each one differently. Come for the coffee, stay because the cinnamon buns make leaving difficult. This is a room that asks you to be present, and the La Marzocco gives you a reason to comply.”

Oud Zuid

Belgian beans, a Kees machine, and that owner.

“An Antwerp roastery outpost in quiet Oud Zuid, run by an ex-employee with the original's blessing. The Kees van der Westen Spirit is the centrepiece, and the Ethiopian and Kenyan beans are dialled in with care. Bert's greeting, "Welcome to Antwerp", sets the tone for everything that follows.”

Coffee District

8.6

Oud Zuid

A proper coffee stop in Amsterdam's museum quarter.

“Coffee District runs Five Ways Coffee Roasters as its house anchor and rotates guest roasters, Lot Sixty One and Common Greens have both appeared, through a La Marzocco Linea PB that's clearly well looked after. The cortado is tight, the cinnamon bun is the right call, and on a clear morning the outdoor seats fill before most of the neighbourhood has laced its shoes.”

✦ About this guide

Why these 12

Filter is where an Amsterdam cafe shows whether it is paying attention. Espresso hides a lot behind milk and sugar. A V60 does not, and neither does a batch brew that has been sitting too long.

This list ranks on the breadth of what a venue actually brews, and it deliberately gives no credit for roasting in-house. That belongs to the roasters guide, and rewarding it twice would make these two lists near copies of each other. Thirty-three Amsterdam venues clear the floor and have their origins on record.

✦ How this list was built

What it took to make it

Scored 7.5 or better
Filter on the menu is the entry condition.
Origins on record
A venue is left out if we cannot list what it is actually pouring.
Breadth of brew methods
The strongest signal here. V60, Chemex, AeroPress and batch each count.
Roasting is not rewarded
Deliberately excluded so this list does not become a copy of the roasters guide.
✦ Asked and answered

Amsterdam questions

Where can I get proper filter coffee in Amsterdam?

White Label Coffee in Oud West is the strongest all-rounder, brewing espresso, V60 and AeroPress from its own roastery.

What is the difference between this and the roasters guide?

This list ranks on how many ways a venue brews and what origins it pours. The roasters guide ranks on the depth of the roasting programme. Roasting in-house earns no credit here, deliberately, so the two lists stay genuinely different.
