✦ The verdict

The cortado is dialled. The records are real.

“Black Gold runs White Label Coffee through a La Marzocco Linea and takes the extraction as seriously as the crates. The cortado is the move, balanced, clean, no theatre. Then you flip through the hip hop and jazz selection while it cools, and suddenly an hour has passed.”

There's a moment when you walk into Black Gold Amsterdam where you have to decide which part of the room to give your attention to first. The La Marzocco Linea is running on one side; a wall of vinyl is doing its own quiet work on the other. Most places that try to combine two things this seriously end up half-committed to both. Black Gold is not most places.

The coffee programme runs through White Label Coffee, an Amsterdam roaster with a clean, consistent approach to sourcing. The house espresso, a Brazilian with fruit-forward character, is dialled in with care, and the cortado has earned its reputation among regulars as the drink to order: the milk-to-shot ratio is controlled, the texture is right, and it doesn't disappear in two sips. The filter menu extends across V60, AeroPress, batch brew, and cold drip, which means there's a format for however much time you have.

The baristas here are musicians, DJs, and producers, and it shows, not in any performative way, but in the rhythm of the place. The record selection leans into hip hop, soul, funk, jazz, and Afrobeat, and whoever is behind the counter tends to know exactly what's on the turntable and why. Vinyl spins daily; live sessions happen with enough regularity that you might walk in on one.

The space splits into a front area near the counter and a more open rear section with benches and tables, the back is where you settle if you're staying. Pastries and baked goods cover the food side, with vegan options available, which is enough if you're here for coffee and records rather than a meal.

Founded in 2015 via crowdfunding and driven by owner Siebrand van Hengel's dual obsessions, Black Gold picked up the Brian's Coffee Spot Best Overseas Coffee Spot Award in 2018, a credential that reflects what the 4.8 Google rating across nearly 400 reviews also suggests: this place delivers consistently, not just on a good day.

If you're the kind of person who can spend forty minutes with a V60 and a crate of records, this is your room.
