Monks Coffee Roasters brings an Australian-influenced brunch and filter programme to Amsterdam, running its own Probat roaster off-site.

✦ The verdict
“Patrick Abbott spent 26 years in Melbourne before opening this, and it shows, the brunch menu holds its own against the coffee, which is saying something when the beans are roasted on a 12kg Probat a few kilometres away. Order the Turkish eggs alongside a filter and you'll understand why the neighbourhood stopped letting other businesses survive in this spot.”

There's a backstory worth knowing before you walk into Monks. Patrick Abbott, an Irishman who spent 26 years in Melbourne, opened this place in 2016 with a clear idea of what a neighbourhood coffee bar should feel like, relaxed, focused, and anchored by coffee that the team roasts themselves on a 12kg Probat. That Melbourne DNA shows up in the flat white, which is properly made, and in a brunch menu that goes well beyond the perfunctory avocado toast that passes for food in lesser coffee spots.
The space reads minimalist without feeling cold. A communal table pulls together the usual mix of freelancers and regulars; window seats face out to the street for the distracted and the people-watching inclined. The crowd on a weekday morning is dense with laptops but the noise level stays low enough that it doesn't feel like a co-working space that happens to serve coffee.
The filter programme is the main event. V60, Kalita Wave, Aeropress, Chemex, French Press, the full range is on offer, drawing from a rotating selection of beans that have included origins from Colombia, Mexico, and, less commonly, China. With all coffee roasted by their own team, the traceability is direct and the menu reflects it. Espresso is dialled in tightly, and the cold brew is worth ordering if you're in on a warm afternoon.
Food is taken seriously here in the way that Australian café culture demands. The Wu Tang breakfast and Turkish eggs are the standout orders, both well-executed, both worth the trip on their own terms. Pastries and cakes hold up through the afternoon for anyone who arrives post-lunch.
A few practical notes that matter: card only, no cash. The single-use plastic ban has been in place since day one, compostable packaging throughout, and they'll send you home with spent coffee grounds if you ask. It's the kind of operational consistency that tends to indicate a place that has thought carefully about what it stands for.
With a 4.7 rating across over 900 Google reviews, the reputation is not accidental. Monks has outlasted a string of previous tenants at this address, which in a neighbourhood as competitive as Oud West says something worth noting.
