Sango Specialty Coffee is a micro-roastery café in Amsterdam's Centrum pulling competition-lot pourovers on a La Marzocco Linea Strada.
✦ The verdict
“Mitchell La Grouw Onuki finished second at the 2025 Dutch Brewers Cup, and the lots on the filter menu make that credential feel earned. The La Marzocco Linea Strada is dialled tight, the sourcing runs from Kenya to Panama, and the 1670 building gives the whole thing a gravity that newer fit-outs can't buy.”

A micro-roastery that earns its floor space
Sango occupies a 1670 building near the Singel canal, and the architecture does real work here, low ceilings, worn wood, the particular stillness of a space that has absorbed three and a half centuries of Amsterdam winters. There are no laptops open. The no-screen policy is enforced politely and respected genuinely, which changes the room in ways that are hard to quantify but immediately felt.
Co-founders Mitchell La Grouw Onuki and Kaho roast everything in-house under the Sango name, a word drawn from the Japanese for corals, carrying an implicit argument about fragility and sustainability. The sourcing list reads like a competition programme sheet, which makes sense: Mitchell came second in the 2025 Dutch Brewers Cup, and the filter menu reflects that level of engagement. Lots from Las Marias in Colombia, Guama in Kenya, Los Naranjos in Panama, origins rotated seasonally, each one traceable to a named producer.
The La Marzocco Linea Strada handles espresso duties and is clearly well-tended. The flat white has earned its reputation, the milk texturing is controlled, the espresso base has enough structure to hold its own through the dilution. But the filter programme is where Sango's identity becomes clearest. Pourovers are prepared with the kind of deliberateness you'd expect from someone who competes, and the batch brew option offers an accessible entry point without feeling like a concession.
Food runs to pastries, yogurt bowls, overnight oats, and toasted sandwiches, the sort of short, honest menu that knows its role. The matcha latte has developed a following of its own, which tracks given the Japanese thread running through the brand's DNA.
Upstairs seating opens the space up beyond what the ground floor suggests on arrival. The spiral staircase is part of the building's character; it also means the upper floor is a different kind of quiet. Worth the climb.
For visitors calibrating Amsterdam's specialty coffee scene: Sango sits at the serious end. The sourcing is legible, the competition credentials are current, and the screen-free atmosphere makes it one of the few places in the city centre where the coffee actually gets your full attention.
