✦ The verdict
“Bocca has been doing this since 2001, before Dutch specialty coffee was a scene, and the Kerkstraat cafe still feels like proof of concept. The custom four-group La Marzocco Strada is dialled with the kind of confidence that comes from running your own supply chain through Trabocca. Order the flat white, then buy a bag of the Ethiopian to take home.”
— The DFC Editors
Walk into Bocca and the first thing you notice is the ceiling, high, open, the kind of space that used to move cars and now moves a lot of very good coffee. The converted garage format gives the room an industrial generosity that most Amsterdam cafés simply don't have, and the warm timber throughout keeps it from feeling cold.
Bocca has been roasting since 2001, which in specialty coffee terms makes it practically ancient. It holds a European Coffee Award for Best Artisan Roaster in Europe (2014) and a B Corp certification, credentials that reflect a sourcing operation with genuine depth. Their sister company Trabocca handles almost all of the green bean buying, which means the supply chain is unusually legible: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, all traceable back to specific relationships with farmers. The founder's Ethiopian heritage is woven into that sourcing focus, and it shows in how the Ethiopian lots are handled, with care that goes beyond marketing copy.
The espresso programme runs on a custom four-group La Marzocco Strada, which tells you something about the volume and seriousness of the operation. The flat white is the drink most regulars reach for, and it earns that reputation, milk texturing is controlled, the ratio is honest, and the house espresso has enough structure to hold up without being aggressive. Filter is available alongside espresso, and with a rotating origin roster this wide, it's worth asking what's on.
Food runs to pastries, baked goods, and light lunch options, the cinnamon bun and raspberry brownies get mentioned often enough to be worth trying. Vegan and gluten-free options are available if you need them.
The crowd skews toward people who have somewhere to be but aren't in a hurry, remote workers, neighbourhood regulars, the occasional tourist who's done their research. Mornings are when the room finds its rhythm: focused, quiet enough to think, busy enough to feel alive. By midday the energy shifts slightly, but it never tips into chaos.
If you're passing through Amsterdam and want to understand where Dutch specialty coffee started, this is the place to sit with an espresso and find out.
