✦ The verdict
“An Antwerp roastery outpost in quiet Oud Zuid, run by an ex-employee with the original's blessing. The Kees van der Westen Spirit is the centrepiece, and the Ethiopian and Kenyan beans are dialled in with care. Bert's greeting, "Welcome to Antwerp", sets the tone for everything that follows.”

An Antwerp outpost with its own Amsterdam identity
Caffènation Amsterdam has a founding story worth knowing: opened in 2014 by a former employee of the original Antwerp roastery, with the blessing of the mothership but operating independently. Owner Bert van Wassenhove apparently greets newcomers with "Welcome to Antwerp, the most beautiful part of Amsterdam", which tells you everything about the register of the place before you've even ordered.
The machine is a Kees van der Westen Spirit, which is not a piece of equipment you find in cafés that are casual about extraction. It's a Dutch-built, pressure-profiling espresso machine with a following among people who care about what happens between the portafilter and the cup. Here it's running Caffènation's own Belgian-roasted beans, with Ethiopia and Kenya featuring prominently in the lineup. The espresso is the headline act, but the filter programme is taken seriously too, worth asking what's on if you arrive before the lunchtime rush.
The signature drinks lean indulgent: there's a cappuccino with Belgian white chocolate at the base finished with honey and ginger powder, and a Cappuccino Star built with whipped cream, caramel, and Malteser crunch. These aren't for the purist, but they're clearly made with intention rather than novelty. The Chaser, a cappuccino alongside an espresso shot, is the one to order if you want to read the espresso clearly before the milk takes over.
The space itself occupies a corner building across two floors, decorated with vintage elements and art that traces back to Antwerp. It doesn't feel like a transplanted chain, the Amsterdam location has accumulated its own regulars, its own rhythms, its own particular afternoon light. Banana bread and vegan chocolate bars do the job on the food side; this isn't a brunch destination, but you won't leave hungry.
The crowd skews local and laptop-open on weekdays, with families appearing at weekends. The two-floor layout means there's usually a corner that suits whatever you came for, a quick espresso at the counter, a long filter with a book, or a meeting that needs a table and reliable WiFi. Bert's presence makes the difference between a good café and one people return to by name.
