Amsterdam · The Netherlands
Specialty coffee in Centrum, Amsterdam: where to find quality roasters and cafés among the canals, from Bocca to White Label Coffee.
Centrum is where Amsterdam's specialty coffee story started. Bocca, the Netherlands' first specialty roaster, founded in 2001, still runs its calm Kloveniersburgwal café here, and that lineage matters. The neighbourhood's better bars are the result of two decades of accumulated craft, not recent trend-chasing.
The good stuff clusters in two pockets. The Negen Straatjes canal streets hold Back to Black, Hummingbird and Sango, the last of which scored 9.5 in our database and whose co-founder Mitchell La Grouw Onuki placed second at the 2025 Dutch Brewers Cup. Damrak and Nieuwendijk remain dead zones; don't test that theory. The eastern stretch toward Waterlooplein is thinner but worth it for Bocca alone.
Weekday mornings before 10:00 are the window. Crowds on Damrak peak by mid-morning and spill into the canal streets by early afternoon on weekends. Most bars here open around 08:00–08:30. Come early, sit down, and don't rush.
The full list is in the explorer above. These are the ones we'd actually send a friend to.

Yes, for the setting as much as the coffee. It occupies the former sacristy of the Oude Kerk, a building dating to 1517, and the garden is a genuine reprieve when the weather holds. Order the V60 or flat white; the apple pie is well regarded.
