✦ The verdict
“Screaming Beans roasts its own beans, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, and pulls them through a Kees van der Westen lever machine. That combination alone is worth the trip. The oat milk cappuccino is the order to benchmark the setup; the chocolate-chip cookies are not an afterthought.”
— The DFC Editors
The Kees van der Westen is the first thing you notice. The lever machine sits behind the counter like a piece of industrial sculpture, and it earns that attention, Screaming Beans has been roasting its own coffee since 2007, and the setup here reflects a programme that takes the full chain seriously, from green sourcing to extraction.
The house roasts draw from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Guatemala, and Colombia, and the rotation gives the espresso menu enough range to reward repeat visits. On filter, the same beans show up in a different register, cleaner, more open, worth ordering alongside rather than instead of the espresso. The milk work is controlled, and the oat cappuccino in particular is a reliable indicator of how well a bar is dialled in on any given morning.
The space runs across two floors, which means there's usually somewhere to land even when the ground level fills up with the laptop crowd. And it does fill up, Waterlooplein draws a wide mix of people, and Screaming Beans has become a reliable anchor for locals running errands at the market, tourists navigating between the Rembrandt House and the canals, and the kind of remote worker who treats a good flat white as a productivity tool. The energy is rarely quiet, but it's rarely chaotic either.
Food is worth factoring in. The chocolate-chip cookies and almond rolls are the kind of thing that makes you order a second coffee as an excuse to stay. The vegan cookies hold up without the usual compromise in texture.
If you're visiting Amsterdam and want to benchmark the local specialty scene, Screaming Beans is a reasonable place to start, not because it's the only option, but because the in-house roasting and the lever machine give you something specific to evaluate. The baristas are generally happy to talk through the espresso programme if you ask, and the bean origins are legible enough on the menu to guide the conversation.
