Giraffe Coffee Bar & Academy is Rotterdam's roastery and SCA training hub, pouring single-origin microlots straight from the source.

✦ The verdict
“The EK43 and twin Sanremo setup aren't there for cafe theatre, they're teaching tools, and Giraffe's cuppings run weekly whether or not the public shows up. Come for a scheduled class or bean pickup, not a laptop afternoon. The Single Origin Cold Brew rotates with the harvest and tastes like it was dialled in that morning, because it probably was.”
— The DFC Editors
Schiebroek isn't a neighbourhood you stumble into for coffee. It's light-industrial, tram line 8 territory, and Giraffe's Ratelaarweg building announces itself as a working roastery before it announces itself as a cafe. That's because it is one, primarily. The drum roasters run in back, the training room hosts SCA coursework and barista workshops, and the small public-facing counter exists almost as a byproduct of everything else happening on site.
What that means in practice: this is where you go to pick up a freshly bagged microlot, not to camp out with a laptop. Power outlets are limited and the space isn't configured for lingering. But if you're serious about the craft, that's the appeal. The Mahlkönig EK43 gets used constantly, not for show, and the Sanremo Zoe Competition alongside a Sanremo YOU means the espresso side is dialled with the kind of attention you'd expect from a roaster training other people's baristas for a living.
The beans themselves justify the trip. Giraffe sources from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru and Rwanda, with a genuine emphasis on high-altitude lots, hence the giraffe branding: the animal that only grazes the highest acacia leaves. It's a tidy metaphor, but the sourcing backs it up. Ask what's on the seasonal roster and you'll likely get an answer involving a specific farm and altitude, not just a country name.
If you time it right, the experience opens up considerably. Sign up ahead for one of the weekly cuppings and you're tasting through the same blind flights the roasting staff uses to fine-tune their curves. There's also Geisha on offer for those chasing something rarer, and a Dirty Chai built on Nomadschai and a double shot of house espresso if you want something less clinical than a pour-over flight.
Don't come expecting food, a patio, or a long sit. Come with a bag to fill or a class booked, and you'll leave understanding why Rotterdam's specialty scene treats this address as a reference point rather than just another stop.
