✦ The verdict
“Half the tables here double as shelf space for ceramics and cards, which tells you exactly what Zus en Kees prioritises. The Giraffe Coffee Roasters espresso is properly dialled, but the real draw is Dickies boterkoek, made by the sisters' own father. Come mid-morning on a weekday, order the oat flat white, and you'll understand why regulars treat this as an extension of their own kitchen.”

Walk in on a weekday morning and you'll find the tables doing double duty: coffee cups sharing space with stationery displays, ceramic mugs for sale sitting a few feet from the ones actually in use. Zus en Kees is run by sisters Eef and Maaike alongside Eef's husband Kees, and the three-way ownership shows in how the space is split between espresso bar and lifestyle shop without either side feeling like an afterthought.
The espresso runs on Giraffe Coffee Roasters beans, and the oat flat white is the order most regulars default to. It's not a filter-heavy programme, espresso is the whole story here, so anyone hoping for a rotating single origin on pour-over should look elsewhere. What the menu lacks in brew variety it makes up for on the food side. Dutch home baking, waffles, and sourdough toasties round out a breakfast platter list that leans comforting rather than experimental, and the vegetarian and vegan options are handled without much fuss.
The one thing you have to try is Dickies boterkoek, a butter cake baked by the sisters' father. It's the kind of item that turns a coffee stop into a small ritual, and it's clearly become a point of pride rather than just another pastry case option.
Don't bring a laptop. The café actively discourages remote work setups to keep the room feeling like a shared living space rather than a co-working annex, and with narrow walkways between the gift shelves, spreading out a laptop and charger cables would be awkward anyway. This is a place for sitting with a friend, browsing the ceramics from independent Dutch and European makers, and taking your time over cake.
Bergpolder isn't Rotterdam's coffee destination neighbourhood, and Zus en Kees seems entirely fine with that. It functions as a genuine local fixture for Rotterdam-Noord residents who want something warmer than the downtown coffee bars, a place where young families and craft shoppers overlap with regulars who've been coming since 2019. The outdoor seating on Bergselaan catches the street's leafy character, and the low music volume keeps conversation easy. It's a small, specific kind of café, and it knows exactly what it is.
