✦ The verdict
“Plenty of cafes claim purpose, fewer back it with a dialled-in Linea Classic and their own roastery. Heilige Boontjes trains former offenders and at-risk youth in the same room where a Bakkie Roffa gets pulled correctly, espresso floated on batch brew, no gimmick about it. The old holding cells upstairs still exist. Order the flat white on their house Blend 010 and the mission stops being a footnote.”
— The DFC Editors
Bureau Eendracht held prisoners until 2016. Now it holds a loft-style cafe with a La Marzocco Linea Classic behind the counter and a roastery producing the house Blend 010 somewhere in the building. The gap between those two facts is the whole story here, and Heilige Boontjes doesn't let you forget it, but it also doesn't lean on it as a substitute for the coffee.
The program trains disadvantaged youth and former offenders in roasting, brewing, and service, a partnership between a community police officer and a youth reintegration specialist that started in 2015. What that means in practice: baristas who are learning on the job, in a room built for a different kind of institution, now full of light through what were probably once barred windows.
The menu doesn't apologise for any of it. Espresso runs through the Linea Classic onto a Mahlkönig K30 Vario grind, origins rotating through Brazil, Ethiopia, Honduras, Indonesia, Peru, and Rwanda, some via their own roastery, some via Pure Africa Coffee. Batch brew sits alongside it, and the Bakkie Roffa, a local riff floating a double shot on top of filter, is the drink to order if you want the full range in one cup. It's blunt and effective rather than delicate.
Food goes well beyond the pastry case. Brunch toasts, eggs Benedict, croquette sandwiches, flammkuchen, all built for people settling in rather than grabbing and running. The mushroom croquette sandwich on crusty bread is worth the detour on its own. Vegan and gluten-free options are handled properly rather than as an afterthought, and the matcha program (try the Sakura if you're there for something cold and sweet) suggests a kitchen paying attention beyond the espresso machine.
The room itself is generous, big communal tables, low music, a crowd that mixes students, remote workers, and neighbourhood regulars without anyone looking out of place. Weekday mornings before noon are the move if you want a table and some quiet. It's not a hushed coffee lab, and it isn't trying to be. Upstairs, the old holding cells have become meeting rooms and an overnight stay called Penthouse Prison, which tells you everything about how seriously this place takes its own history and how lightly it wears it.
