✦ The verdict
“Most transit-hub cafes coast on foot traffic alone, but Lebkov built a genuine programme anyway. Moto Coffee roasts the organic single origins, the La Marzocco and Victoria Arduino gear is dialled with actual intent, and a Louis Claus Bokaal winner has pulled shots behind that bar. By Northern European station-cafe standards, this is well above what the location demands.”
— The DFC Editors
Most cafes built into a train station concourse treat coffee as an afterthought to volume. Lebkov & Sons does not. Set into a corner of the Groot Handelsgebouw, the bi-level room designed by Studio Akkerhuis uses geometric timber and concrete to signal something more considered than the usual grab-and-go kiosk, and the coffee backs that up.
Moto Coffee supplies the beans, organic single origins from Guatemala, Ethiopia, Brazil, and Kenya, rotated on custom blends and roasted on energy-efficient machinery. Extraction runs through La Marzocco groups with Victoria Arduino grinders, and the batch brew program means you're not limited to espresso if you want to taste what a washed Kenya actually does on filter. One of the baristas here, Coen van Sprang, won the Louis Claus Bokaal and represented the Netherlands at the World Barista Championship, which explains why the shots taste dialled rather than rushed even during the morning surge.
The matcha program deserves a mention too. It's ceremonial grade, sourced from Kyoto, and the Iced Mango Matcha Latte layers it over scratch-made mango puree rather than syrup. If you're avoiding dairy, six milk alternatives are on offer at no upcharge, including Oatly and Sproud pea milk, which is more generous than most Rotterdam cafes bother with.
Food runs scratch-made: sourdough baked in-house with three-ingredient dough, organic soups, salads, and bakery items covering vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free needs. The avocado egg sourdough paired with a Kenya filter is the move if you want something substantial before a train.
Ground floor gets loud and fast during commuter hours, understandably given the location on Stationsplein. Head to the mezzanine if you want a quieter stretch for laptop work; it's stairs-only, so plan accordingly if mobility is a concern, but the ground floor and terrace are step-free. Used grounds get diverted to RotterZwam, an urban mushroom farm, which is a small but concrete gesture that fits the rest of the operation. This isn't a ritual pour-over bar with table service, and it never pretends to be. It's a station cafe that happens to have real credentials behind the counter.
