✦ The verdict
“Half of Middellandplein seems to end up here by mid-morning, and the rotating guest filters from Friedhats or DAK give regulars a reason to keep asking what's new. The espresso runs on Giraffe, roasted just down the road, pulled on a well-kept La Marzocco. Order the eggs benedict, grab a seat on the terrace, and watch the square wake up.”

Middellandplein has never lacked for energy, and ROAST leans into it rather than away from it. The plant-filled room sits right on the square, windows open to the tram bells and market chatter, and by nine on a weekday the regulars have already claimed their tables. This is a neighbourhood spot in the fullest sense: baristas who recognise faces, a terrace that fills the moment the sun comes out, and a low hum of conversation that never quite tips into chaos.
The espresso is Giraffe Coffee Roasters, a Rotterdam name that gets treated with real respect here, pulled on a well-maintained La Marzocco and finished with a flat white that holds its microfoam properly. But the more interesting order is the V60. ROAST rotates guest filter beans from Manhattan, Friedhats, DAK, and A Matter of Concrete, so the light-roast single origin on the counter this week (a washed Ethiopian, an experimental Colombian) won't be the same one you find in a month. It's a small but genuine act of curiosity in a city that can lean heavily on house blends.
Matcha drinkers are looked after too. The Michi Matcha Latte uses fully traceable ceremonial-grade tea, steamed with oat or dairy, and it's clearly not an afterthought bolted onto the menu to tick a box.
Food follows an Australian all-day breakfast logic: loaded bagels, eggs done your way, brunch plates that lean hearty rather than dainty. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are built into the menu rather than squeezed in as substitutions, which matters on a square this multicultural. Ellis and Kim opened the place in 2020 chasing the Antipodean cafe model, and Bas, who took over in 2024, hasn't diluted that identity. It still reads as a room built by people who spent time in Melbourne or Wellington cafes and wanted Rotterdam-West to have one too.
Weekday mid-mornings are the move if you want a window table and a quiet pour-over. Weekend brunch service is a different animal entirely, laptop seating gets deprioritised, the terrace fills fast, and the whole square seems to funnel through the door. Either way, this is a place that rewards showing up more than once, if only to see what's dripping through the V60 this time.
