✦ The verdict

A design shop and café that happens to pull great espresso

“The ceramics and artwork could easily be the whole draw, but Manhattan Coffee Roasters' Ethiopian single origin holds its own against the objects on the shelves. The backyard garden is the real find here, quiet enough to hear the espresso machine through the window. Order the flat white, stay for the labneh.”

Blend balances life as a gallery and neighborhood cafe with an uncompromising coffee program, showcasing exceptional roasts from Manhattan and Shokunin alongside filter brews and community cuppings. While its multifaceted identity as an art space and brunch eatery keeps it from being a dedicated coffee bar, the mindful execution and serene garden setting make it a compelling destination.

Walk past the front window display of handmade ceramics and books, and you might forget there's a coffee counter at all. That's the point. Blend opened in early 2024 in the old Studio Unfolded storefront on Nieuwe Binnenweg, and the founders, Christine and Maarten, built the concept around a Camino del Norte walk rather than a coffee blueprint. The result is a room that reads more gallery than café, all soft light and minimalist shelving, until you notice the espresso machine tucked among the artwork.

The coffee comes from Manhattan Coffee Roasters, with Ethiopian, Colombian, and Honduran beans rotating through the espresso and filter menus, plus occasional guest pours from Shokunin. A flat white built on the Ethiopian single origin carries the bright, slightly floral character you'd expect from a washed lot, and it's textured with either dairy or oat without the sourcing story overwhelming the cup itself. Filter drinkers get a straightforward, well-made option rather than an afterthought.

Food leans Middle Eastern: strained labneh bowls, sourdough from local baker Meneer Leffers, seasonal toasties. The crispy chili labneh paired with that sourdough is worth ordering deliberately, not as a side thought to the coffee. Vegetarian, vegan, and dairy-free options run through the menu without much fuss.

The real find is out back. A secluded courtyard garden sits behind the main room, and on a sunny weekday it's one of the calmer outdoor spots in Middelland, worlds away from the record shops and boutiques lining Nieuwe Binnenweg out front. Weekday mornings bring laptop workers to the communal table near the window, though power outlets are limited and the crowd stays quiet by design, not accident.

Blend also runs 'Bakkie Fleur,' a pay-it-forward coffee scheme with local foundation Stichting Anders, letting guests prepay a drink for someone in the neighbourhood who needs it. It's a small gesture, but it fits a place that seems more interested in being a good neighbour than a destination. Note that the historic entrance has steps and a tight threshold, so step-free access isn't available. Nominated for Rotterdam's Favoriete Nieuwkomer in 2024, and it's easy to see why: this is a café that treats coffee as one part of a considered whole, not the entire pitch.
