Nine Bar pours Giraffe Coffee Roasters espresso across two sunny terraces in Rotterdam's Laurenskwartier, built for brunch over laptops.

✦ The verdict
“Nine Bar knows what it is: a spot for sourdough toasties and a flat white in the sun, not a filter bar for parsing origin notes. Giraffe's beans come through clean on the La Marzocco, and the walk-through layout between Botersloot and Nieuwemarkt is a genuinely useful trick when one terrace fills up. Order the banana bread, sit outside, and don't bring your laptop on a Saturday.”

Half the appeal of Nine Bar is the trick of it: walk in from Botersloot and you can walk straight out the other side onto the Nieuwemarkt square. Two terraces, one bar in between. On a clear weekday morning, that back terrace catches the sun in a way the neighbourhood's other cafes don't, and it fills accordingly with market shoppers, young professionals on a coffee break, and a scattering of dogs tied to chair legs.
The espresso itself comes from Giraffe Coffee Roasters, a local partnership that runs through a La Marzocco machine and gets pulled with the kind of consistency you want from a neighbourhood spot rather than a destination one. It's balanced, reasonably rich, and doesn't ask much of you beyond ordering a flat white and getting on with your day. That's the register Nine Bar operates in throughout: dependable rather than showy. Don't come expecting a rotating single-origin filter list or three ways to taste the same bean. There's espresso, and there's the milk drinks built from it, and that's the extent of the ambition.
Where Nine Bar spends its energy is the food. All-day breakfast, artisanal toasties, and a vegan banana bread that comes recommended more often than any drink on the menu. The Breakfast Smoothie, an espresso shot blended with banana, milk, and oat bran, is an odd little signature but a sensible one if you're trying to get out the door with both caffeine and calories handled at once. The Iced Strawberry Matcha, layered ceremonial-grade matcha over strawberry puree and chilled milk, is clearly built for a phone camera, and it photographs as well as it sounds.
What you shouldn't do is show up on a Saturday with a laptop and expect a seat. The cafe is explicit about this: weekends are for diners, and even weekday laptop use only gets tolerated at a handful of counter spots if you're lucky and the place isn't full. Given the building's history as one of Rotterdam's early third-wave coffee spots, there's a slight irony in a room this compact prioritising brunch turnover over long solo sits with a filter and a book. But it's an honest trade-off, clearly signposted, and easy to plan around if you know what you're walking into.
