Kopi Soesoe: Specialty Coffee in Katendrecht, Rotterdam

Kopi Soesoe on Deliplein pairs Manhattan and Schot roasters with its cardamom-spiced Indonesian coffee in a laptop-free living room.

✦ The verdict

The neighbourhood living room that happens to pull great espresso

“Half of Katendrecht seems to end up on Deliplein at some point during the week, and Kopi Soesoe is why. The Linea Classic handles Manhattan and Schot beans competently enough, but the real draw is the house Kopi Soesoe, condensed milk and cardamom stirred up from the bottom of the glass. No laptops, no rush, just regulars and a slice of the cheesecake everyone talks about.”

Anchored by beans from top-tier local roasters Manhattan and Schot, Kopi Soesoe blends serious coffee credentials with a beloved, vinyl-soundtracked living room atmosphere. While manual pour-overs yield to batch brews during peak rush hours, the warm owner-led hospitality and distinctive Indonesian-inspired signature drinks make it a standout Rotterdam fixture.

There's a particular kind of relief in walking into a coffee bar and seeing no one hunched over a MacBook. Kopi Soesoe enforces this by policy, not accident, and it changes the room. People talk here. Regulars linger. The vinyl sessions, when they happen, actually get listened to because the espresso machine goes quiet during sets.

The coffee itself splits into two clear lanes. On one side, straightforward specialty: espresso and batch brew from Manhattan Coffee Roasters and Schot Coffee Roasters, pulled on a La Marzocco Linea Classic, with beans sourced from Brazil and Kenya covering the usual chocolate-to-bright spectrum. V60 and Aeropress are on the menu for anyone who wants to slow down further. It's competent, unshowy specialty coffee, the kind that doesn't need to announce itself.

The other lane is the reason people cross the city for this place. The Kopi Soesoe itself, a double espresso layered over sweet condensed milk and dusted with cardamom, is not trying to be a flat white. It's an Indonesian coffee tradition filtered through a Rotterdam espresso setup, and the instruction from the staff is always the same: stir it up from the bottom before you drink it, don't just sip the espresso off the top. Do that and you get something genuinely different from anything else on a Rotterdam coffee menu, spiced and sweet and layered in a way espresso alone never is. The iced version, the Ijskoffie, does the same trick over ice. The Koenjit Soesoe swaps cardamom for turmeric in a golden latte that reads more wellness cafe than dockside bar, but it works.

Food leans vegetarian and unfussy. The toasties are creative without trying too hard, but the New York cheesecake is the actual local legend, the kind of thing that apparently spun off its own mini-festival among Katendrecht regulars. Order a slice with the Kopi Soesoe and you've got the full local ritual.

Katendrecht itself used to be Rotterdam's dockside red-light district before its slow turn into a food and creative quarter, and Kopi Soesoe on Deliplein has been part of that shift since 2013. It doesn't feel like a cafe chasing a scene. It feels like the scene was built around it.
