Sound Kitchen in Delfshaven pairs a high-end headphone showroom with Manhattan Coffee Roasters' pour-overs and espresso.
✦ The verdict
“Most concept cafes let the concept do the talking while the coffee coasts. Not here. Manhattan Coffee Roasters supplies a custom High Fidelity blend alongside rotating micro-lots, and the V60s are poured with the same attention as the open-back headphones in the back room. Sit at the window counter on a weekday morning and you get both a clean cup and a proper listening session.”
— The DFC Editors
Walk past the espresso bar at Sound Kitchen and you hit a wall of open-back headphones and amplifiers, which tells you everything about what founder Michael Wongso was going for. He built this place after visiting headphone listening lounges in Singapore, and the idea translates well to Little C's brick-and-glass waterfront setting: coffee and sound as equally serious pursuits, sharing one room.
The coffee program is handled by Manhattan Coffee Roasters, one of Rotterdam's more respected names, and it shows in the range on offer. Beyond the custom High Fidelity espresso blend (developed specifically for this venue with Ben Morrow and Esther Maasdam), you'll find single-origin filter options from Tanzania, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, plus occasional competition-level lots. This is not a place phoning in the coffee side of a lifestyle concept. The V60 program gets real attention, and if you're chasing something rarer, they've had geisha lots come through.
The signature drinks lean playful without losing the plot: a Ginger Beer Espresso that cuts through the spice with a clean double shot, an Iced Strawberry Matcha built on ceremonial-grade green tea, and a Costa Rican Dark Chocolate Mocha using 70% single-origin chocolate rather than syrup. Food comes from Harvest Cafe and Bakery (pastries, daily except Tuesdays) and François Geurds for sweets, which is a strong pairing by Rotterdam standards.
The room itself splits its personality cleanly. Weekdays, the window counters welcome laptops and quiet focus work, power outlets included. Weekends flip the switch entirely: no screens, just conversation and listening. It's a rule worth knowing before you show up with a laptop on a Saturday expecting a workspace.
The real move, though, is heading to the audio section at the back while your pour-over is being made. Testing a pair of high-end open-backs while a V60 filters through in the next room is not an experience you'll find replicated elsewhere in the city. Outside, the terrace looks over the Little C plazas toward the Euromast, which is worth the trip on its own on a clear morning.
