✦ The verdict
“Twenty-four years running Look taught the Achterberghs something about consistency, and it shows here. The Giraffe Coffee blend is pulled on a well-kept La Marzocco, but the boterkoek and chocolate cake are what regulars actually queue for on a quiet Delfshaven corner.”

Solo Espresso Bar sits on a corner in Delfshaven where the morning light does most of the decorating. It doesn't need much else. Frank, Wendy, and their daughter Nirvana Achterbergh spent 24 years running Restaurant Look, a garlic restaurant that built a real following in Rotterdam, and when they closed that chapter they didn't retire, they pivoted into espresso. That background shows up less in flourish and more in steadiness: the till moves fast, the toasts arrive hot, and nobody's improvising the recipe for the chocolate cake.
The coffee itself is built around Giraffe Coffee Roasters, a Rotterdam roaster, pulled on a La Marzocco with beans sourced from Ethiopia, Peru, and Kenya. The house blend flat white is the sensible order, milky but not blunt, and there's a rotating single origin on filter for anyone who wants the Ethiopian or Kenyan lot to speak for itself rather than get folded into milk. It's not a program chasing competition scores. It's a program built to be right, day after day, for people walking in before work.
Food is where the restaurant background is most obvious. This isn't a bakery case of afterthought muffins, it's all-day breakfast plates, proper sandwiches, and a toast rendang that reads like someone with real kitchen instincts wrote the menu. The boterkoek is dense and buttery in the correct Dutch way, and the chocolate cake, carried over from Look, has enough of a reputation locally that people order it without asking what's in it. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are handled properly rather than bolted on. 0 The room itself is bright, calm, and low on music, with a communal table that works well for a laptop session if you arrive before the late morning fills it in. It closes at 4pm and skips Sundays and Mondays entirely, so this is a weekday-morning kind of place, not a destination for an evening coffee. Note too that the corner entrance has a step up, so it's not wheelchair accessible. For what it does, in the hours it's open, it does it without any wasted motion.
