✦ The verdict
“Schot was doing specialty coffee here before most of Rotterdam knew the term. The Giesen W15 sits right in the room, the EK43 grinds for filter with real intent, and the Peruvian Gesha on hand brew is the kind of lot most cafes only mention in passing. Order it as a V60 and taste why John Schot's name still carries weight in this city.”
— The DFC Editors
John Schot was roasting coffee out of his own house in 2010, years before Rotterdam had much of a specialty scene to speak of. That history matters here, not as nostalgia but as evidence: this is a roaster who has spent over a decade refining what goes into the cup, and the tasting bar inside the old Diepeveen warehouse is where you get to see the current results.
The room does a lot of the talking before the coffee does. Raw brick, steel beams, high ceilings, and a Giesen W15 drum roaster sitting in full view of the communal tables. De Huidenclub gallery shares the space, and there's an independent design bookstore on the mezzanine, so the crowd skews toward designers and creative professionals working quietly rather than chatting over the counter. Music stays low. Laptops are common and welcome.
Espresso runs through a Victoria Arduino Eagle One paired with a Mythos grinder for dial-in consistency, and the Magic, a Melbourne-style double ristretto under steamed milk, is a strong, compact drink that doesn't hide behind the milk. But the real reason to make the trip out to Delfshaven is the filter program. The EK43 and Bentwood Vertical 63 handle single origin work, and the pour-over list draws from Colombia, Ethiopia, Peru, Ecuador, and Guatemala, including washed, honey, and natural lots from farm relationships Schot names on the menu rather than gesturing at vaguely. There's Gesha on offer too, run through the V60 or the NextLevel Pulsar, and it's priced and poured like the competition-grade lot it is.
Food stays simple and doesn't try to compete with the coffee for attention: toasties, a rotating selection of cakes, vegan banana bread, and a pistachio cheesecake worth ordering alongside anything from the filter list. Both dairy and oat milk are available, though this isn't really a milk-drink destination.
It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and there's no extended brunch menu if that's what you're after. But for a quiet weekday seat, a bag of freshly roasted beans to take home, and a filter coffee that actually reflects the origin printed on the bag, this is one of the more serious rooms in Rotterdam.
