✦ The verdict
“Most cafes that lead with tea treat the coffee as an afterthought. The Tea Lab sources from Giraffe Coffee Roasters and gives the espresso menu genuine parity with its 40-plus loose-leaf selection. The mezzanine level is calm enough to actually taste what's in your cup.”
— The DFC Editors
Coffee and tea, given equal billing
The Tea Lab opened in 2013, which in Rotterdam specialty coffee terms makes it a veteran. It has never tried to be a pure coffee bar, and that honesty is part of what makes it work. The dual identity is stated plainly: Giraffe Coffee Roasters on the espresso side, a rotating cast of more than 40 loose-leaf teas on the other. Neither programme is treated as decoration for the other.
Giraffe is one of the more consistent roasters operating out of the Netherlands, and the coffee here reflects that. The espresso is clean and the milk work is controlled, which is all you really need to know before ordering a flat white. There is no filter programme to speak of, so if you arrive hoping for a V60 or a batch brew, you will be redirected toward the tea menu, which is not the worst outcome.
The space itself earns its footprint. The ground floor handles the walk-in crowd and the lunch rush without feeling pressured. The mezzanine level is where the room changes register: quieter, slightly removed from the counter energy, good for a two-hour stretch with a laptop or a long pot of something floral. The food menu leans hard into dietary flexibility, with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options running across brunch, cakes, sandwiches, and salads. The Red Velvet cake has a following. The vegan high tea is the kind of thing people plan around.
The crowd on any given weekday is a reliable cross-section of the neighbourhood: students from the nearby university, remote workers who have clearly claimed their preferred table, and the occasional visitor who wandered in from the street and stayed longer than intended. The pace is relaxed but not slow. Orders move.
For a coffee-first visitor, The Tea Lab asks for a small recalibration. The espresso is good, the sourcing is legible, but the room and the menu are built around something broader. Come for the Giraffe flat white, stay for the tea list, and let the mezzanine do the rest.
