✦ The verdict

Shokunin's Rotterdam outpost with a food menu worth the detour

“Most roaster-owned cafes funnel you toward a single house blend and call it a programme. Dune runs up to fourteen different Shokunin beans across espresso and filter, which gives the menu a range you rarely see at this scale. The coffee kombucha, brewed with Dusty Brewing, is the kind of left-field addition that actually works.”

Roaster-owned, and it shows

Dune is the cafe arm of Shokunin Coffee Roasters, opened by Jelle van Rossum in 2022 in Rotterdam's Scheepvaartkwartier. The neighbourhood sits in the shadow of the Erasmus Bridge, and the space reads like someone who roasts coffee for a living decided to build the room they actually wanted to drink it in.

The interior lands somewhere between poured concrete and warm wood, with soft music keeping the energy low enough that conversation doesn't require effort. Locals fill it out most mornings, and the pace is unhurried without feeling slow.

The coffee

The menu rotates across up to fourteen different Shokunin beans, available as espresso or filter depending on what's dialled in that day. Because the roastery and the cafe share an owner, the sourcing story is unusually legible: what's on the bag is what's in the grinder, and the turnaround between roast and cup tends to be tight. The iced black is a reliable order if you want to read the bean clearly. The matcha latte and pistachio latte sit on the drinks menu for good reason, and the coffee kombucha, made in collaboration with Dusty Brewing and served on tap in flavours like jasmine, oolong, and ginger beer, is worth ordering at least once even if fermented tea isn't your usual register.

The food

Brunch here is taken as seriously as the coffee, which is not always the case at specialty bars. The almond pancakes and Turkish eggs come up repeatedly for good reason, and the focaccia holds its own as a lighter option. Vegan alternatives are available across the menu. The kitchen runs until 16:00, so there's no narrow window to catch a full brunch order.

Worth knowing

The name comes from van Rossum's favourite book, which tells you something about the register of the place. It isn't performing coffee culture at you. The 4.8 rating across nearly 400 reviews suggests the consistency is real rather than aspirational. Laptop workers are accommodated, and the room is calm enough that a two-hour sit doesn't feel transgressive.

For visitors calibrating Rotterdam's specialty scene, Dune sits near the top of the Centrum options, not because of its aesthetic, but because the roastery connection gives the coffee programme a depth that standalone cafes rarely match.
