De Koffiebar pairs everyday espresso with Italian sweets and Surinamese-influenced food on a busy Rotterdam Centrum street.

✦ The verdict
“Rotterdam's Centrum has no shortage of places to sit with a flat white and a laptop, but De Koffiebar adds something most don't: a kitchen pulling in Surinamese flavours alongside Italian pastries. The coffee is straightforward espresso-based, with a house signature and five milk options. Come for the linzensoep and the display case; the coffee is solid enough to keep you there.”
— The DFC Editors
De Koffiebar doesn't ask you to choose between a coffee run and a proper meal. That's the point.
Walk in and the room does its job immediately: brick walls, Chesterfield sofas, the low hum of a café that has been absorbing the neighbourhood's foot traffic for years. It sits a short walk from Rotterdam Centraal, which means the crowd shifts constantly throughout the day. Morning regulars with laptops give way to lunch groups, then afternoon stragglers nursing something hot. The terrace out front is the kind of spot where you end up staying longer than planned.
The coffee is espresso-only, built around the house signature, Koffie de Koffiebar. No roaster is named on the menu, no single origin rotates on the filter bar, and there is no filter bar. If you are coming specifically to chase a washed Ethiopian or a dialled-in Kenyan, this is not that place. What you get is consistent, unpretentious espresso with a full spread of milk options including oat, coconut, and almond. The matcha is on the menu too, which tells you something about the range of people they are catering to.
The real argument for De Koffiebar is the food. New ownership since March 2024 brought a renovation and a kitchen pivot that now runs Italian pastries alongside Surinamese-influenced dishes, homemade toasties, and apple pie. The display case near the counter changes daily. The linzensoep is worth checking for. It is an unusual combination on paper, but in practice it gives the place a distinct identity that a straight-up espresso bar on this stretch of Karel Doormanstraat would struggle to match.
The Google rating sits at 3.7 across 154 reviews, which reflects a venue that divides opinion more than it wows. Expectations calibrated to specialty coffee will likely come away underwhelmed on the cup. Expectations calibrated to a relaxed, food-forward café with decent espresso and a room you actually want to sit in will find more to like. The two things are not the same visit, and it's worth knowing which one you're after before you arrive.
