✦ The verdict
“Selma's runs Stooker on a La Marzocco and bakes everything in-house, the cardamom buns, the sourdough, even the gravlax. The coffee is clean and well-pulled, but it's the combination that gets you: a proper Nordic pastry alongside an espresso that can actually hold its own.”

Selma's, Oud West
There's a particular kind of morning that Selma's seems built for. You arrive before the neighbourhood fully wakes up, the smell of cardamom hitting you before the door swings shut, and Anna and Jorrit's place does what good bakeries do, it makes you slow down without asking you to.
The coffee comes from Stooker Specialty Coffee, one of Amsterdam's more dependable local roasters, and the espresso is pulled on a La Marzocco. The house blend sources from Brazilian Paraná, which gives the espresso a grounded, low-acid base, round and clean, the kind of shot that holds up well under oat milk without losing its shape. Filter is on the menu too, though the espresso programme is clearly the main event here.
But let's be honest: most people come for what's in the glass case. The cardamom buns are made in-house, as is the sourdough, the gravlax, the smörrebröd, almost everything, in fact. The organic dairy comes from a local farm. This is not a place that buys in its pastries and hopes you don't notice. You notice. The cardamom bun in particular has the kind of pull that makes you order a second coffee just to justify staying.
The food menu runs from morning through to a proper lunch, grilled sandwiches, salads, quiche, meatballs, with enough vegan and gluten-free options that it doesn't feel like an afterthought. The smörrebröd is worth ordering if you're there past eleven.
The crowd is almost entirely local. Regulars who've claimed their corner, parents with pushchairs, the occasional laptop open in the back. The fika concept, coffee as a reason to pause rather than a fuel stop, is baked into how the place operates. Nobody seems to be rushing.
On a sunny weekend morning, the terrace fills up fast. That's the version of Selma's most worth seeking out: coffee in hand, cardamom bun on the table, Oud West doing its quiet, unhurried thing around you.
