Five Ways Coffee Roasters brings in-house Loring roasting and a Slayer Steam espresso programme to the heart of Oud West.

✦ The verdict
“Five Ways roasts on a Loring S35 and pulls through a three-group Slayer Steam, that's not décor, that's a programme. The honey Geisha, when it's on, is the clearest argument for ordering off-menu. Turkish eggs and a washed Ethiopian filter is a better morning than most of Amsterdam can offer.”
— The DFC Editors
There's a particular kind of confidence that comes from roasting your own. At Five Ways, it shows in the menu, not in the length of it, but in the specificity. The Honey Geisha, when available, is listed without fanfare, which is somehow more compelling than a chalkboard announcement. The sourcing runs directly from farmers or through importers the team trusts, and the S35 Loring does the rest.
Ben Kozica-O'Callaghan opened this place in 2017, and the Melbourne influence is legible without being a caricature. The Slayer Steam, a three-group, is the centrepiece of an espresso programme that takes milk work seriously. Lattes here are pulled with enough care that the latte art is a byproduct of good technique rather than a performance of it. Five grinders across the bar means the filter and espresso programmes aren't competing for resources, which matters more than it sounds.
The room itself rewards a second look. Kozica-O'Callaghan designed the interior himself, and there's a coherence to it, the kind that comes from one person's taste rather than a committee's compromise. The detail that earns its own mention: a bookshelf concealing a speakeasy-style coffee training room. It's not something you'd stumble on, which is the point.
The food menu earns its place without overshadowing the coffee. Turkish eggs, a brekky sandwich, banana bread, and a vegan raspberry pistachio pastry that gets ordered more than you'd expect, these are the kinds of options that keep a neighbourhood crowd returning across the week rather than just on weekend mornings.
The crowd reflects the dual nature of Oud West: locals who've made this part of their daily architecture, and visitors who've done enough research to end up here rather than somewhere more obvious. The energy sits somewhere between purposeful and relaxed, people working, people talking, occasionally someone lingering over a Geisha filter who clearly has nowhere else to be.
For the Brazilian and Ethiopian lots on rotation, the extraction is clean and the flavour profiles are communicated clearly enough that ordering isn't a guessing game. This is a roaster-led café that happens to be an excellent neighbourhood café too, the balance is harder to strike than it looks.
