✦ The verdict
“Boot Coffee on espresso and pour-over, a Panama Hartmann Birdsong with apricot and cherry running through it, carrot cake that earns its reputation, Coffee Room has been doing this since 2012 and it shows. The upstairs floor is where the serious work happens; downstairs is where the regulars linger.”
— The DFC Editors
Coffee Room has been doing its thing since 2012, and it shows, not in a tired way, but in the way that a place earns its regulars. The ground floor pulls you in off Kinkerstraat; by the time you've climbed to the second or third floor, the street noise has dropped and the pace has slowed.
The coffee programme runs on Boot Coffee, and the current star is the Panama Hartmann Birdsong, an espresso with apricot and cherry up front, a clean sweetness, and a spiced finish that lingers. It's the kind of shot that makes you slow down between sips. The flat white is well-executed: the milk texturing is controlled and the ratio holds, which isn't always a given in a café that also does brunch for a crowd. Pour-over is on the menu too, and worth ordering if you want to spend time with the Birdsong without the milk.
The food earns its place. The carrot cake has a following, and the kimchi tosti and avocado and salmon toast keep the savoury side honest. Organic dairy, plant-based milk alternatives, and a genuine effort at dietary range (vegan, nut-free options available) suggest the kitchen is paying attention to the same things the bar is. Water arrives with a strawberry garnish, which is either charming or slightly eccentric depending on your mood, either way, it's a detail that sticks.
The space has a vintage, lived-in quality, mismatched furniture, natural light on the upper floors, and the kind of layout that invites you to stay longer than you planned. The crowd skews student and creative, laptops open, orders nursed. Upstairs is the better call for focused work; the ground floor has more energy and more foot traffic.
Owners Chris and Maja have kept the emphasis on organic and sustainable sourcing throughout, it's not performed, just consistent. After more than a decade on Kinkerstraat, Coffee Room has the kind of quiet confidence that comes from not needing to prove anything.
