✦ The verdict
“Most Amsterdam kiosks are pulling mediocre shots into paper cups. Ikaria Food is running a La Marzocco Linea PB and sourcing through Lot Sixty One, then shaking that espresso into a Freddo Cappuccino with creamy cold foam that locals will tell you is the best in the city. The spanakopita alongside it is not an afterthought.”

A kiosk with a clear point of view
Ikaria Food doesn't try to be everything. It's a blue kiosk on a square, and it knows exactly what it's doing: Lot Sixty One on a La Marzocco Linea PB, a short menu of Greek iced coffee drinks, and a pastry case that makes the decision harder than it should be.
The concept came from Nicolas Mostrous, British-Greek, and his Dutch partner Marloes, who drew inspiration from the Greek island of Ikaria, whose residents are famous for an unhurried, long-lived way of life. That ethos shows up in small ways. The pace here is quick but not pressured. The order is simple. You take your coffee and find a spot on the square.
The espresso programme is anchored by Lot Sixty One, one of Amsterdam's most consistent roasters, and the Linea PB is well-suited to the volume a busy kiosk demands. The extraction is clean and the milk work, using Arla Organic dairy, is controlled enough to hold up in the flat white format. But the drinks that define Ikaria are the Greek ones: the Freddo Cappuccino and Freddo Espresso. Both are shaken cold over ice, the cappuccino finished with a dense, cold foam that sits above the espresso like a separate layer. It's not a novelty drink, this is how coffee is ordered at a kafeneio in Athens, and Ikaria does it properly enough that it's earned a reputation as the best version of it in the city among locals who know what they're comparing it to.
Food is worth ordering. The spanakopita is the obvious call, flaky, properly seasoned, not the pre-packaged kind, and the banana bread holds up as a mid-morning option if the pastry case is running low by the time you arrive.
Kwakersplein itself is a recently refurbished square in De Baarsjes, and on a sunny morning the combination of good coffee, a pastry, and a bench in the light is hard to argue with. This is a takeaway operation at its core, don't arrive expecting a table and a long sit-down, but as a neighbourhood kiosk with a genuine roaster relationship and a coffee identity that goes beyond the standard Amsterdam flat white, it's doing something specific and doing it well.
The 4.8 rating across nearly 400 reviews is not accidental. Come for the Freddo. Stay for the spanakopita.
