✦ The verdict

A bike workshop that happens to run a serious coffee bar too

“Most cafes that lean on a lifestyle theme let the coffee slide. Coppi doesn't. The Linea Classic gets proper attention and the Schot Coffee Roasters filter list rotates on genuine single origins, not just Colombia as a safe default. Order the Clever Dripper, watch the mechanic true a wheel six feet away, and the two worlds never once feel like a gimmick.”

Coppi balances Rotterdam cycling lifestyle with genuine specialty coffee execution, showcasing locally roasted single origins from Schot on a classic commercial setup alongside careful manual filter brews. While the active workshop and wholesome breakfast menu draw a broad neighbourhood crowd, the founder's specialty pedigree ensures the coffee program remains a legitimate local draw in its own right.

Named for Fausto Coppi, the Italian cycling champion, this arch space under the Hofbogen viaduct makes no secret of its founder's two obsessions. Elisa Rootert ran Rotterdam's Urban Espresso Bar before opening her own place, and that lineage shows in the details that matter: a La Marzocco Linea Classic worked with real attention, a filter list that rotates through Schot Coffee Roasters' Colombian, Ethiopian and Kenyan lots, and a Clever Dripper program that treats immersion brewing as a genuine alternative rather than a decaf-adjacent afterthought.

The room itself does the unusual work of housing a functioning bicycle workshop without the coffee feeling like set dressing. Vintage racing frames hang near the counter, a mechanic tunes wheels within view of the tables, and the mid-century colour palette keeps the whole arch feeling bright rather than cluttered. It reads as a genuine hybrid, not a coffee shop cosplaying as a bike shop for Instagram.

Weekday mornings belong to laptops. The tables come with outlets built in and the wifi holds up, which explains why Coppi fills with remote workers by mid-morning. Weekends flip the crowd toward cyclists refuelling mid-route and neighbourhood families doing brunch, and the volume rises accordingly. If you want the calmer version of Coppi, get there before 11am on a Tuesday.

The kitchen backs up the coffee program with all-day breakfast bowls, buckwheat waffles with banana and blueberry jam, and a rotating stable of house-baked sweets, most of it built to accommodate vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free orders without a separate shadow menu. The Iced Strawberry Matcha, ceremonial grade with a real strawberry coulis, gives the non-coffee crowd something worth ordering too.

For a first visit, skip the flat white and go straight for whatever single origin is running through the Clever Dripper that week. Ask the mechanic about the free COPPI Rides while you wait, 50 to 80 kilometres through the South Holland countryside on weekends when the group runs. It's the kind of local detail that tells you this place was built by someone who actually rides, not someone who just likes the aesthetic of it.
