Juffrouw van Zanten serves Giraffe Coffee on a La Marzocco alongside organic brunch in a Kralingen cafe built for families and remote workers alike.
✦ The verdict
“Most child-friendly cafes treat coffee as an afterthought. Juffrouw van Zanten pulls Giraffe beans on a La Marzocco and means it. The food is organic, the menu runs from breakfast through high tea, and the upper floor stays calm enough to actually get work done.”

A cafe designed from lived experience
Juffrouw van Zanten opened on Valentine's Day 2017, and the origin story matters: the owners, Judith Prins-van Zanten and Reinder Prins, built the place because a cafe like this didn't exist in Kralingen and they needed one. Judith, originally a designer, solved the perennial problem of where to put the toys by engineering them directly into the tables. The result is a room where a toddler can be occupied and a flat white can be consumed in the same sitting, without either party suffering.
The coffee is Giraffe, a Rotterdam-rooted roaster with a clean, approachable house profile. It comes through a La Marzocco, and the extraction here is consistent rather than adventurous. If you're after rotating single origins and a barista who'll talk you through the processing method, this isn't that. If you want a well-pulled espresso drink that holds up alongside a proper plate of food, you're in the right place. Filter is on the menu too, though the espresso bar is clearly where the focus sits.
The food earns its own attention. Everything runs organic, with a menu that covers breakfast, brunch, and lunch, plus a high tea offering that draws a crowd on weekends. The kitchen handles vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free without making it feel like a concession. Homemade pastries show up regularly, and the portions are calibrated for people who are actually hungry rather than just looking for something to photograph.
The space splits across two floors. Downstairs absorbs the family energy, buggies included, with the play infrastructure doing its job quietly in the background. Upstairs runs noticeably quieter, and on a weekday morning it fills with laptops and people who've claimed their corner for the duration. The WiFi is reliable, the tables are workable, and nobody seems to rush you.
The crowd on Lusthofstraat leans neighbourhood. Regulars on first-name terms with the counter staff, parents who've factored the play area into their weekly routine, and the occasional visitor who found it via a Rotterdam coffee guide and wasn't sure what to expect. The 4.1 across 700-plus reviews reflects a place doing something specific very well, rather than everything perfectly.
If you need a silent, child-free espresso bar, this will frustrate you. If you need somewhere that handles a good coffee and a proper lunch in a room that doesn't require you to manage your surroundings constantly, Juffrouw van Zanten has been doing exactly that since 2017.
