✦ The verdict
“Blijdorp doesn't have a deep specialty coffee bench, so Phil fills a gap that most residential neighbourhoods in Rotterdam lack. The iced yuzu Americano and blueberry hojicha latte signal a kitchen that thinks beyond the standard menu, and the food, with its Asian-inflected twists, gives you a reason to stay past the first cup.”

Coffee inside a store that earns its browse
Phil started life as Breakfast in Rotterdam HQ, ran that name for seven years, and rebranded in 2025. The bones are the same: a space where you come for coffee and end up staying because the room keeps giving you things to look at. Design objects, secondhand fashion from Slowdown Store, prints and paintings by local artist Roeqie. The retail and the cafe are not separated by a partition or a rope. They share the same air.
The coffee menu runs espresso and manual brew, with no roaster credited on the menu or the website. That's a gap worth noting. What Phil does instead is lean into the drinks themselves: the iced yuzu Americano brings a clean citrus note that works better than it sounds on paper, and the iced blueberry hojicha latte, available with oat, soy, or coconut milk, is the kind of signature drink that gives a place its personality. The dirty chai is straightforward and popular for good reason.
Matcha is on the menu too, which alongside the hojicha signals that the team is more interested in the broader landscape of Japanese-adjacent drinks than in building a single-origin filter programme. That's a choice, not an oversight. The crowd here is not arriving with a V60 agenda.
Food is the other reason to show up. The Asian-inflected breakfast and lunch menu includes avocado toast with feta and kimchi, which sounds like a collision but holds together. Gluten-free options are available. The kitchen is small but deliberate.
Blijdorp is a green, residential neighbourhood that moves at its own pace, and Phil fits that rhythm. The regulars come in, browse a shelf, order something iced, eat something warm. The 4.8 rating across 200 Google reviews reflects a place that has figured out what it is and executes it consistently. It is not a destination for someone chasing a specific roaster or a competition-grade espresso. It is a destination for a good morning in a neighbourhood that deserves one.
