✦ The verdict
“The mocha latte with raw cocoa and red beet juice sounds like a wellness gimmick, it isn't. The espresso underneath is locally roasted and properly pulled, and the avocado toast with poached eggs holds its own on merit. Moods earns its 4.7 without leaning on the novelty of the concept.”

Moods Coffee & Brunch, Amsterdam
The concept sounds like it shouldn't work. A café inside a gym, in one of Amsterdam's most polished residential neighbourhoods, pitching itself to the specialty coffee crowd. And yet Moods has been doing this since 2011, and the 4.7-star average across over a thousand reviews suggests it has figured something out.
Walking in, you're aware of the SportCity context, there's an energy here that a standalone café wouldn't have, a low hum of activity from people arriving or leaving a session. But the café itself holds its own. Natural light does a lot of the work, and the space reads as modern and considered rather than an afterthought bolted onto a fitness facility. The designated working area on weekdays draws a reliable crowd of laptops and flat whites, power outlets tucked under the sofa seating.
The coffee is locally roasted, the specific roaster isn't named on the menu, which is a minor frustration for the origin-curious, and the programme leans espresso. Milk drinks are the main event, with oat milk available as standard. The signature drinks are where Moods makes its personality clear: a mocha latte built with raw cocoa, vanilla, and biological red beet juice; a turmeric latte using Molina Turmeric; a chai that regulars seem to return for specifically. These aren't coffee-forward orders, but they're made with enough intention that they sit comfortably alongside the espresso menu rather than undermining it.
The food is the other reason people come back. The brunch menu is broad without being unfocused, avocado toast, poached eggs, smoked salmon, acai bowls, protein smoothies, and it caters to gluten-free, plant-based, and protein-heavy preferences without making any of those feel like compromises. Post-workout plates and slow-morning brunches coexist on the same menu, which takes some kitchen discipline to pull off.
Oud Zuid is an interesting neighbourhood for this kind of venue. The streets around Museumplein and Vondelpark attract a mix of well-heeled locals and tourists navigating between cultural stops, and Moods draws from both pools. The crowd on a weekday morning skews local and purposeful; weekends bring a more leisurely pace.
If you need absolute quiet or a strictly coffee-focused experience, the gym adjacency will register as background noise. But if you're after a well-made flat white, a substantial brunch plate, and somewhere to open a laptop for a few hours in one of Amsterdam's better-looking neighbourhoods, Moods makes a coherent case for itself.
