✦ The verdict

The croissants are the point, but the coffee holds its own.

“Louf built its reputation on sourdough and laminated dough, and the pastry side genuinely earns that reputation, cardamom croissants, almond croissants, pain au chocolat, all gone before noon on a Saturday. The flat white is smooth and well-textured, never an afterthought. This is a bakery that happens to do coffee right, not the other way around.”

Bakkerij Louf is a beloved artisanal bakery that happens to serve excellent specialty coffee from top-tier local roasters. However, because its primary identity and draw is its exceptional sourdough and pastries rather than being a dedicated coffee destination, its coffee score is strictly capped by our rubric.

Louf, Oud West

The queue outside Louf on a Saturday morning tells you something before you've even smelled the bread. By half eight, the croissants are already going. By eleven, the cardamom pastries are a memory.

Louf was started by former chefs from the café next door, and that kitchen background shows in the detail. The sourdough here isn't a side project, it's the point. Long fermentation, proper crust, the kind of crumb that holds butter without collapsing. The almond croissants and pain au chocolat are the reliable anchors, but the more interesting pastry rotation, petitos, sesame miso cookies, cinnamon swirls, rewards the early arrivers and the regulars who've learned which days to show up.

The coffee is espresso-based and served without fuss. The oat flat white is the order that keeps coming back in the reviews, and it earns that reputation: smooth extraction, well-textured milk, nothing harsh at the finish. The roaster isn't listed on the menu or the website, which is a minor frustration for the sourcing-curious, but the cup itself is clean and consistent. This is a place where the coffee supports the food rather than competing with it, and that balance feels intentional.

The space has the warmth you'd expect from a bakery that fills up quickly, wooden details, the smell of something just out of the oven, the particular low hum of a neighbourhood that has found its morning rhythm. Cheese comes from Fromagerie Kef, meat from Lindenhoff. The ingredient sourcing is local and specific, even if it doesn't announce itself loudly.

For lunch, the sandwich menu picks up where breakfast leaves off, straightforward, well-sourced, nothing overwrought.

If you're after a quiet corner and a long laptop session on a weekend morning, the timing will work against you. But on a weekday, the pace drops and the space opens up. Come early regardless, not because the coffee will run out, but because the cardamom pastries will.
