Coffee Bru has anchored Amsterdam Oost's specialty scene since 2010, pouring Rum Baba roasts alongside homemade pastries on Beukenplein.

✦ The verdict
“Coffee Bru was pulling Rum Baba shots on Beukenplein before the neighbourhood became a destination. The La Marzocco Linea is dialled in with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from doing this since 2010, and the filter programme gives the espresso a run for its money. Order the carrot cake. It's not an afterthought.”

Coffee Bru has been here long enough to remember when Amsterdam Oost wasn't on anyone's coffee map. Opening in 2010, one of the first specialty bars in the neighbourhood, it helped write the script that others followed. That history shows, not in any self-congratulatory way, but in the easy confidence of a place that knows exactly what it is.
The coffee comes from Rum Baba, the sister roastery the owners also run, which gives the programme a coherence you don't always find. The La Marzocco Linea is well-maintained and the espresso pulls cleanly, the flat white is a reliable benchmark, milk textured with enough control to carry the cup without overwhelming it. The filter menu is the quieter draw, worth asking about if you want to understand what the Rum Baba beans actually taste like before the milk gets involved. Ethiopian lots tend to anchor the rotation, and the acidity is handled well rather than chased for its own sake.
The food isn't an afterthought. The scones and carrot cake come from the same Rum Baba operation, and it shows, these aren't bought-in fillers. The iced latte has developed something of a following in warmer months, and the oat matcha has earned its place on the menu through repeat orders rather than trend-chasing.
The crowd reflects the square it sits on: young families negotiating pushchairs, remote workers settled in for the morning, older locals who've been coming since before the neighbourhood tipped. The South African coffee culture that inspired the concept, unpretentious, community-first, genuinely inclusive, has translated well to this corner of Amsterdam. Dogs are welcome. Children are welcome. Nobody is performing.
Beukenplein itself has grown up around Coffee Bru rather than the other way around, and the bar wears that seniority lightly. The Algemeen Dagblad top-10 listing arrived early and the 4.7 Google rating across 270 reviews has held. Consistency over more than a decade is a harder thing to maintain than most cafés make it look.
