✦ The verdict

Michelin-flagged for good reason, the whole day works.

“La Cabra on the Synesso, cardamom buns still warm from the oven, and a natural wine list that takes over when the afternoon light drops. Co-founder Daniel Schein knows both sides of the counter, and it shows in how seriously the coffee programme is treated alongside the bottles.”

4850 successfully defies the usual rule that restaurants cannot be true specialty coffee destinations. With international press coverage from Sprudge and European Coffee Trip, and a rotating lineup of top-tier Nordic roasters like La Cabra, it operates as a top-tier specialty bar by day and a Michelin-recommended wine bar by night. The sophisticated Scandinavian interior and highly knowledgeable staff complete an exceptional, dual-identity experience.

Coffee, cardamom, and a Synesso that earns its keep

There's a particular kind of Amsterdam Oost place that refuses to be one thing, and 4850 is the best argument for why that can work. Co-founded by Swedish chef Rikard Andersson and barista-sommelier Daniel Schein, it carries a dual identity without any visible tension, the espresso programme and the wine list feel like they were designed by the same person, because in a sense they were.

The coffee anchor is La Cabra, the Copenhagen roaster whose sourcing tends toward clean, fruit-forward profiles that reward attention. On the Synesso Hydra, the espresso pulls tight and bright, the kind of shot that makes a flat white feel almost unnecessary, though the oat version here is worth ordering anyway. The V60 filter option shifts with the season, which means repeat visits rarely deliver the same cup twice. Batch brew is available for those who just need coffee to happen.

The cardamom and cinnamon buns deserve their reputation. Warm, properly spiced, and sized to justify skipping a second breakfast elsewhere, they're the reason the morning queue forms before the door opens. The broader food menu leans Nordic: considered, not showy, with a pastrami sandwich that holds its own against the pastry competition.

The space itself is Scandi-minimal in the way that actually means something here, pale wood, clean lines, no decorative noise. It was Michelin-recommended as a café, which tells you something about the seriousness of the kitchen even if the room doesn't announce it. Schein's background in both disciplines shows in how the two halves of the day are programmed: the 8am coffee crowd and the Thursday-night wine drinkers aren't as different as they might seem.

By evening, the menu shifts and the natural wine list takes over. It's an unusual pivot for a specialty coffee bar, but 4850 makes it feel logical rather than opportunistic. The same minimalist aesthetic that suits a morning cortado also suits a glass of cloudy orange wine.

If you're visiting Amsterdam and want a single stop that maps the current state of the city's café culture, good extraction, credible food, and a wine programme that doesn't treat coffee as the lesser offering, this is a reliable data point.
