✦ The verdict
“Kometen Brood started as a lockdown sourdough project and has grown into the anchor of NDSM's morning. The pain au chocolat with sesame, miso, and caramel is the kind of thing you think about on the ferry home. Coffee is espresso-only and competent, the baking is what earns the trip.”
— The DFC Editors
Bread first, coffee second, and that's fine
Kometen Brood & Café doesn't pretend the coffee is the headline act. Walk in and the smell hits you before anything else, sourdough crust, butter, something caramelised. The bakery is open to the room, and you can watch the bakers working while you wait in line. It's a good line to be in.
The space suits the NDSM wharf, high ceilings, raw materials, the kind of industrial-chic that doesn't feel forced because it's earned by the building itself. Families take up the bigger tables; solo visitors tend to drift toward the counter. The crowd is Noord through and through: unhurried, local, here for the ritual of a Saturday morning rather than a quick caffeine transaction.
The coffee is espresso-based, straightforward. No roaster is named on the menu, no single origin rotates on filter, and if you're calibrating against Amsterdam's more coffee-forward venues, Lot Sixty One, Back to Black, White Label, this sits in a different category entirely. The extraction is functional and the milk work is competent, but the programme isn't trying to compete on that axis. Order a flat white, enjoy it with something from the pastry case, and recalibrate your expectations accordingly.
That pastry case is where Kometen earns its reputation. The pain au chocolat with sesame, miso, and caramel is specific enough to be interesting and executed well enough to justify the ferry ride from Centraal. The sourdough loaves move fast, come early if you want a whole one to take home. The focaccia and mushroom toast with granola are worth serious consideration for lunch.
Kometen started as a lockdown sourdough project in 2020, which explains both the evident craft and the sense that this is a place built around genuine enthusiasm rather than a calculated concept. The NDSM location, opened at the end of 2023, gives it room to breathe, physically and programmatically.
If you're crossing the IJ specifically for a coffee experience, this isn't your destination. If you're already at NDSM, or if bread is the point, it earns the detour without question.
