✦ The verdict

Award-winning espresso, far from the tourist noise.

“The Kees van der Westen Mirage is the giveaway, this is a serious machine in a room that doesn't feel serious at all. Espressofabriek roasts at Westergas and the IJburg location gets the full benefit: clean extractions, a V60 programme worth ordering, and banana bread that holds its own against either. The Allegra award from 2013 still means something here.”

As a foundational pillar of the Dutch specialty coffee movement, Espressofabriek brings its pioneering in-house roasts to a beautifully designed neighborhood setting. While it holds historical weight and national acclaim as a roaster, the IJburg location functions primarily as a top-tier local cafe rather than a global pilgrimage site, pairing expertly crafted brews with genuinely warm hospitality.

Own-roast espresso on Amsterdam's eastern waterfront

IJburg is not where most coffee tourists end up. The neighbourhood sits on reclaimed land east of the city, modern, low-rise, and residential in a way that central Amsterdam rarely gets to be. Espressofabriek has been here since 2008, which means it predates most of the cafés that would come to define Amsterdam's specialty scene, and it has the confidence of a place that never needed to announce itself.

The roasting happens at Espressofabriek's Westergas facility, and the IJburg branch is where you taste the results. The house machine is a Kees van der Westen Mirage, a Dutch-built grouphead that carries its own reputation, and it's used here without theatre. The espresso is dialled in with the kind of consistency that comes from owning the supply chain: they know the coffee because they made the coffee. Origins span Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, and Indonesia, giving the blend programme range without overcomplicating the menu.

Filter runs through a V60, which suits the pace of the place. This is not a café that rushes you. The room has the feel of somewhere that was designed to be lived in rather than photographed, warm materials, considered layout, the kind of space where a second coffee becomes an obvious decision rather than an indulgent one.

The food earns its place on the counter. Banana bread and apple pie show up repeatedly in how regulars talk about the place, and the Italian sandwiches cover lunch without stretching into territory the kitchen can't sustain. The iced cascara is bottled in-house at this location, worth trying if you haven't had cascara done well, and worth trying again if you have.

Espressofabriek took third place at the Allegra Coffee Awards' European independent category in 2013, which is a credential that holds up as evidence rather than decoration. The IJburg branch carries that lineage without leaning on it.

For visitors, the practical note is Tram 26, which connects IJburg directly to Centraal Station. The journey takes around twenty minutes and deposits you somewhere that feels genuinely removed from the tourist circuit, which, depending on what you're after, is either the point or the problem.
