✦ The verdict

Coffee is the support act. Matcha is the headline.

“Lera sources ceremonial-grade matcha from Uji and the volcanic Kyushu Islands, and you can taste the difference, the iced latte has a clean, grassy depth with no bitterness. The espresso programme holds its own, but this is the rare De Pijp stop where ordering coffee feels like missing the point.”

Although Lera serves a capable espresso and is featured in European Coffee Trip, its core identity is undeniably that of a premium matcha bar rather than a specialty coffee destination. Because coffee is secondary to its ceremonial teas and lifestyle aesthetic, the coffee score is capped, while the striking, minimalist stainless-steel interior earns top marks for ambiance.

Lera, De Pijp

Pale wood. Stainless steel. A menu that fits on a single card. Lera announces its intentions before you've ordered anything.

This is primarily a matcha bar, and it owns that identity without apology. The ceremonial-grade matcha comes from Uji and the volcanic Kyushu Islands, and when it's prepared traditionally, whisked to order and served without milk or sweetener, you understand why the space was designed the way it was. It asks for your attention. The earthy, umami-deep flavour of a properly made bowl of ceremonial matcha is not background-noise drinking, and Lera doesn't treat it as such.

The coffee is real, too. Experienced baristas handle the espresso programme, and while the machine specs aren't published, the extraction reads as controlled and deliberate, in keeping with everything else here. It's not an afterthought bolted onto the matcha offering; it holds its own. That said, if you're arriving primarily for filter or a long slow pour-over session, this isn't that kind of space.

The iced matcha latte, often made with oat milk, has built a following for good reason. The matcha-to-milk ratio is calibrated rather than defaulting to the weak, grassy versions that have become standard elsewhere in the city. The Pistachio Cloud Matcha Latte is the more indulgent call if you want something that leans into flavour contrast. On the food side, the matcha-vanilla cheesecake is worth planning around.

Lera is also a retail space, matcha tools, accessories, and their own premium powder are available to take home, which gives the visit a slightly different texture than a standard café stop. You might leave with a tin of Uji matcha and a bamboo whisk alongside your takeaway cup.

The space was founded by the same people behind the Venu flexi-workspace, and that sensibility carries over: considered, intentional, not designed for lingering over a laptop. There are no power outlets. The seating is minimal. The message is clear, come for the drink, be present for it, and move on. In a neighbourhood full of all-day café sprawl, that restraint is a genuine point of difference.

Quiet mornings are when Lera is at its best. The calm of the interior and the ritual of a properly made matcha feel earned before the rest of De Pijp has fully woken up.
